I was recently asked to review Morphy Richards' newly launched soup maker, and I said yes (of course). I am now officially a kitchen gadget hoarder!!!
I was quite surprised by how small and compact it is - just slightly bigger than my kettle. And in fact, it looks just like a kettle that has a blending function. The machine comes with a stainless steel jug that has a 1 litre capacity and a lid with a built-in blending motor. The soup maker features two programme options, one for smooth soup and the other for chunky soup. Simply add your ingredients then choose either smooth or chunky soup settings and wait! It doesn't come with a timer but makes a beep sound when the programme begins and ends. The smooth function takes 15 mins while the chunky function takes 25 mins to cook. If your chunky soup is a bit too ‘chunky’ for your liking, you can use the ‘blend’ button to blend the soup to your preferred consistency.
I tried out the 'smooth' function by cooking pea and gammon soup. The machine makes a loud noise when blending and it does this about 6 times or so within the 15 mins, so don't be alarmed when you hear a loud drilling-like noise suddenly, it's the soup maker doing its thing. It does the job pretty well I have to say. The soup was piping hot, everything was cooked and blended till smooth after 15 mins. I didn't have to stir the mixture around half way through or anything and there was no missed bits!
The cons? You can't cook onions, brown the vegetables or meat in the machine as removing the lid cuts the power to the unit. The cooking times are also preset to 15 mins for 'smooth' and 25 mins for 'chunky', so you can't control the cooking times. I've tried both functions and am quite pleased with the results - no raw-tasting or uncooked food so far, so no biggie. A timer would be nice =)
Pea and Gammon SoupPrintable recipe
Prep time: 5 mins
Cook time: 20 mins
Yield: serves 3-4
- 150 g gammon - cut into bite size pieces
- 480 g (3 1/2 cups) frozen peas
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 1 spoon Knorr chicken powder
- 4 tbs heavy cream
- Freshly ground black pepper
- Fry gammon pieces until cooked.
- Place cooked gammon, frozen peas, water and chicken powder into the soup maker and press the "smooth" button.
- Once finished (15 mins), mix in cream.
- Season to taste with salt and black pepper.
Overall, I am quite pleased with the product. It is compact, easy, fast and convenient. I can foresee a lot of soup recipes appearing in this blog from now on, so stay tuned!
