Food in Yangmingshan, Beitou & Danshui

Wednesday, 5 May 2010

We took a day trip to Yangmingshan National Park 陽明山國家公園, Beitou 北投 and Danshui 淡水 on our second day, all located in the northern part of the Danshui MRT line.

Yangmingshan 陽明山

One of the eight national parks in Taiwan, famous for its cherry blossoms, sulfur deposits, hot springs, hiking trails and Taiwan's tallest peak, Mount Qixing (Seven Star Mountain 七星山).

Mantou - steamed buns. Common snack in YMS, you'll see this sold everywhere around the area. They were...bland. With just a hint of whatever flavour it is (They had a choice of strawberry, blueberry, sweet potato, green tea...)

Beitou 北投

Famous for its sulphur hot springs.

Lunch at 24hour small eatery 北投24小吃店 - near the MRT. Best thing was lu rou fan 滷肉飯 (rice with diced braised pork) fatty tasty goodness. First of many happy samples. Other dishes ok.

Desserts at Meet Fresh Sweets Shop 鮮芋仙 - All their sweets are made from natural ingredients, all handmade without chemical additives and are cooked fresh in the store. The ice based desserts very refreshing on a hot day and the fresh hand made yam balls were nice.

Tea at Shan-Yue hot spring Hotel 山樂溫泉 - After lunch and desserts, we went for a dip and relaxed at a hot spring hotel near the MRT. We got a double room package for 2 hrs which includes tea afterwards for NT$980 per double room. Tea had good spread of food. The chawan mushi (steamed egg custard) was so smooth and delicious. The owner let us sample his homemade chili sauce and asked if it was really spicy. He was a bit disappointed when we told him it's not spicy enough.

Danshui Old Street 淡水老街

A sea side town popular for viewing the sun setting into the Taiwan Strait.

Ah Gei 阿給 - a famous snack in Danshui. The name is from abura-age, Japanese for deep fried tofu. It's basically fried tofu stuffed with glass noodles in a spicy and sweet red sauce. Interesting, but not a huge fan. I would say try it because it's the local speciality and it's something different but not because it's damn good. Some say it's much better at the original shop, but it was late and we were too lazy to walk that far for it (the Wild Boar is "allergic" to glass noodles). Here's the details of the original shop if you are interested. We also ordered a bowl of fishballs 魚丸湯 as we saw a lot of other people ordered. Fishballs with meat inside, it was ok. Kekou Fishball was much better.

Ah Poh iron eggs 阿婆铁蛋 - Another speciality of Danshui. Hard boiled chicken and quail eggs in a herbal broth very aromatic but tough (like iron). Tasty, worth a try. Bought 2 to try for NT10 each.
台北縣淡水鎮中正路135-1號 135-1, ZhongZheng Rd

Mochi Grandma’s Milk-flavored Rice Cake 麻吉奶奶鮮奶麻糬 - made using milk and not using glutinous rice very soft texture, not used to it. The Pigpig liked it though.

Kekou fishballs 可口鱼圆 - meat stuffing tasty, springier ball. Delicious!

Fish/ prawn crackers 鱼/虾酥 - We saw a lot of people buying packets of this and overheard them saying it's really good. Sampled some and they were just ok, not that tasty (prefered our Double Decker prawn crackers). The famous shop is Xuyi Fish Crackers 許義魚酥 at 台北縣淡水鎮中正路184號 184 ZhongZheng Rd

Grilled squid found in many stalls. Nice soft texture not rubbery with nice sauce.

Fried baby crabs and shrimp - Refried with garlic spring onion and lots of pepper. Just like any other deep fried stuff. Nice to snack on though.

Mister Donut - Chewier than usual. Tried pon de ring honey flavour (best one we tried). Later tried some others at different branch which was lacking sweetness (think we are too used to Krispy Kreme). The interesting chewy texture is worth a try though. Shop near Danshui MRT station. Other branches available.
