Was looking for tickets to the musical Wicked on when I saw an offer to get the top price £60 seats as well as a 3 course meal at Chez Gerard for the total of £60; sounded like a good deal to me!

Anyway, it was conveniently located very nearby at the Grosvenor Hotel, about two minutes from Wicked’s Apollo Victoria Theatre. The interior was very nice and spacious actually and I spotted a lot of other people on the reservations list that came in for the ticket + meal deal.

Starter: “Traditional French onion soup gratinated with gruyere cheese and croutons” – arguably the worst version I’ve ever had; lacked proper both the sweetness of onions or aroma of the broth and felt a bit watered down.

Starter: “Roasted chicken salad with sautéed mushrooms, bacon lardons and green beans” – this wasn’t half bad actually with the bacon and mushrooms adding a fair amount of flavour although overall it wasn’t anything particularly spectacular.

Main course: “Lemon and herb marinated corn fed chicken supreme grilled and served with pomes frites and salad” – whilst the chicken itself was cooked quite well (reasonably juicy, not overdone), it lacked proper taste and could have used more marinade. All in all, Nando’s does a better job at grilling chicken. (Pigpig: the chicken was really tiny, it's more like pomes frites served with chicken.)

Main course: “Smoked haddock and Gruyere fishcake with a mixed salad, pommes frites and tartare sauce” – best thing about this dish was the tartare sauce as the fishcake itself was pretty ordinary.

Dessert: “Crème brulee” – pretty good actually although my friend found it a bit odd the way it was served in shallow dishes with a large surface area as it meant there was a lot more sugar glaze than usual. (Pigpig: it was served cold, would be great if it's warm.)

Dessert: Vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce – it was exactly as described on the paper; while fairly unimaginative, the ice cream itself was reasonably good with actual vanilla beans giving a nice aroma. Could’ve given more chocolate sauce though.

Food – 4.0
Service – 5.0
Atmosphere – 6.5
Value – ?

All in all, it was a free meal so I can’t complain too much. Still, I expected more and was disappointed; just adding a sauce to the chicken for example would be a relatively simple thing to do that would add loads of flavour to the dish. I’m sure the usual food is of better quality since they do have quite a few branches across London.

Would I eat here again? Not when there are so many other better options available.
